Industry trends

Construction design

In recent years there has been an accelerating trend towards in-fill high-density development near lifestyle and infrastructure facilities. Land values in these areas have skyrocketed and the developers and their designers have sought to gain a greater return for that land. This, in turn, has led to the in-ground works becoming more challenging — closer to property boundaries, deeper excavations and often those excavations being undertaken in ground previously thought unsuitable for such works.

Industry experience — both with the engineering consulting firms and the contractors undertaking the works — is limited for such work. Further, those consultancies do not appear to share their experiences amongst themselves but operate as “islands” and so tend to adhere to approaches that they have been familiar with.

This results in often expensive, slow and sub-optimal approaches to these projects and particularly in the areas of shoring and ground water management, the two key challenges of in-ground works.

At MESO, our experience and know-how means we can suggest approaches that may not always be obvious.

Our principles

Meso’s fundamentally different approach

On every project we focus on what the client is trying to achieve, not simply what we have been asked to quote. We will be involved in more in-ground works in any year than a typical builder will experience in a career. On each site, we observe what works well and where the problems arise. We note which subcontractors and consultants are not only technically good, but also display a constructive, collaborative and learning attitude. We look at what we are doing and seek to improve that.
